Efforts underway to contain gastroenteritis outbreak after hantavirus scare

After the Hantavirus, another cruise ship, this time in Paris, was docked for gastroenteritis.

This is commonly known as ‘stomach flu’.

Authorities, according to the BBC, were alerted after close to 50 passengers fell ill from the infection.

On the UK-operated ship MS Ambition, over 1,000 passengers are on board, and now all are stuck.

Calling it an outbreak, local officials in Bordeaux, a French city, have scrambled to contain it.

Sick guests have been confined to their rooms, as the Ambassador Cruise Line issued a statement.

Telling the BBC, the company said that “a number of guests and crew onboard Ambition have displayed or are displaying symptoms consistent with gastrointestinal illness”.

Authorities were quick to separate hantavirus from the latest outbreak, stressing that there is no reason to “link” the two.

The cruise ship was heading to Liverpool after sailing from Belfast on May 8.

Update on hantavirus patients

A British passenger is still “ill” after being hospitalized in Johannesburg after catching the hantavirus on the MV Hondius.

According to CNN, health officials in South Africa gave a positive update that he is showing signs of recovery.

On the other hand, a French woman is in intensive care after being evacuated from the cruise ship, and her condition, according to doctors, is stable.

Three lives have been lost to the virus, while nine people reportedly fell sick with hantavirus.
