Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating new possible ransom note linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a “new possible ransom note” connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie.
A spokesperson for the department told PEOPLE on Monday, Sept. 28, that investigators were “recently made aware of a new possible ransom note related to the Nancy Guthrie investigation”.
“Investigators are also aware of social media comments regarding the note and are looking further into the information to determine its credibility,” the department added.
The FBI was also contacted about the potential ransom note.
Nancy has been missing since Feb. 1, when her family reported her disappearance after she failed to attend a virtual church service. She was last seen near her home on Jan. 31 after her family dropped her off.
The latest development follows the release of two alleged ransom notes by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department on July 31.
Sheriff Chris Nanos said at the time that investigators hoped the notes would encourage members of the public to recognise details that could help the investigation.
“We just saw what was being said, and we felt like we needed to put something out that’s really accurate, and this was the time,” Nanos said.
He added: “Investigators felt like there’s a number of pieces of information in these notes that it just might jog someone to say, ‘I’ve heard that,’ or [recognize] the wording, the style of the writing.”
Nanos also said investigators found information in the notes that was concerning and hoped releasing them would prompt a response from the community.
Savannah has repeatedly appealed for information about her mother’s disappearance. During the Sept. 15 broadcast of Today, she said she wanted to give Nancy “a proper goodbye”.
In an Aug. 1 Instagram post, Savannah wrote, “Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on — because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do. But make no mistake — our hearts are in ruins.”
The credibility of the newly reported note remains under investigation.
