The UK is once again in the grip of a looming fifth heatwave as soaring temperatures as high as 36C could trigger rare red weather alters as warned by the Met Office.
According to the weather agency, the high temperatures can bring the possible disruptions to railway lines and power networks, prompting it to issue extreme heat warnings.
In the parts of Britain, Monday will be slightly cooler before temperatures begin to rise again on Tuesday. This summer proves really hot for the UK as the country continues to sear in an unprecedented period of dry and scorching heat conditions.
A new UK record was set on Sunday when temperatures reached at least 30.6C, marking the 35th day of 2026 to exceed 30C.
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said that “we’ll probably see highs reaching the mid-30s quite widely on Wednesday, and indeed on Thursday too in England and Wales.”
He added, “Thursday, at this stage, looks the most likely hottest day of the week. There’s a small chance it could get even higher than [36C].”
Speaking about the possibility of issuing the amber and red warnings, Morgan clarified, such warnings are just under consideration at the moment.
Half of England and Wales are grappling with droughts like conditions and as per officials, more regions could be declared affected.
Besides infrastructural damages, officials have warned about food insecurity and health effects especially for vulnerable people.
The UK Health Security Agency issued yellow heat-health alerts for the East Midlands, West Midlands, south-east, south-west and east of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London.
The alerts continue until 9pm on Tuesday but in the case of worsening conditions it can be extended.
