Supporters of Democratic Representative Ro Khanna have launched a campaign encouraging him to run for US president in 2028, following the party’s major victories in the midterm elections.

According to NBC News, former Congressman Jamaal Bowman and progressive strategist Nomiki Konst are leading the new “Run Ro” committee.

The group aims to raise funds and build support for Khanna while he considers entering the presidential race.

“By launching now, we are trying to ensure that the presidential primary debate is framed from a progressive populist perspective,” Konst told NBC News.

The effort comes as progressive Democrats search for a new presidential contender following Bernie Sanders’ campaigns in 2016 and 2020.

Khanna, a California congressman and former co-chair of Sanders’ 2020 campaign, has supported universal healthcare, higher taxes on billionaires and ending US military involvement in foreign conflicts.

He has also gained attention for efforts to release Jeffrey Epstein files and oppose the Iran war.

Khanna welcomed the campaign but said he had not made a final decision.

“I’m honored that people are encouraging me to run on a platform of Medicare for All, ending foreign wars and taxing the billionaires,” he said.

Khanna added that he would decide whether to run after discussing the matter with his family following the holidays. No Democrat has formally entered the 2028 presidential race.
