Patrick Schwarzenegger casting in ‘Beach Read’ adaptation draws backlash due to actor’s political views

Schwarzenegger was confirmed to star opporsite Phoebe Dynevor in the film adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestselling book
The casting of Patrick Schwarzenegger as Augustus Everett in the upcoming adaptation of Emily Henry’s Beach Read has prompted mixed reactions from fans.
The announcement confirmed Schwarzenegger will star opposite Phoebe Dynevor, who is set to play January Andrews. While anticipation for the adaptation remains high, online discussions have focused on both his suitability for the role and his perceived public image.
Beach Read follows two authors with opposing styles who become neighbours for the summer and challenge each other to write outside their genres.
The character of Gus is portrayed in the novel as a brooding and introspective literary writer, a portrayal some readers feel does not align with Schwarzenegger’s on-screen persona.
Criticism from fans has centred on this perceived mismatch. One user wrote, “Logan Lerman and Fabien Frankel were literally RIGHT THERE”. Another added, “This is my personal 9/11,” while a third commented, “Zionist, Trumpist, bad actor,” reflecting wider online debate.
Additional discussion has emerged around Schwarzenegger’s alleged political affiliations, with past social media activity resurfacing and prompting further scrutiny. However, he has reportedly distanced himself from certain views.
The production team has defended the casting decision, noting that Schwarzenegger secured the role after an extensive six-month selection process and strong chemistry reads with Dynevor. Director Yulin Kuang described him as a compelling choice who worked effectively within the cast.
The film remains in development, with production expected to begin in 2026. It forms part of a broader wave of adaptations based on Emily Henry’s novels, reflecting their growing popularity among online reading communities.
