Lionel Richie has canceled his next three concerts after undergoing a heart procedure to treat atrial fibrillation.
The 77-year-old singer was hospitalised this week after experiencing the heart condition, which causes an irregular heartbeat. His representative confirmed that Richie underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation and said it went successfully.
“The doctor said everything went perfectly,” Richie’s representative said in a statement. “Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”
As a result, Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire have canceled three upcoming performances on their Sing a Song All Night Long tour. The shows were scheduled for September 26 at Chase Center in San Francisco, September 30 at United Center in Chicago and October 2 at Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Fans affected by the cancellations will receive refunds through their original points of purchase. The San Francisco concert had already been rescheduled from August after Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris experienced a medical emergency.
Richie’s latest health setback follows several interruptions to his touring schedule this year. In June, he ended a concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, early after telling the audience that he felt dizzy and unwell. Several performances were subsequently postponed while he recovered.
The singer later returned to the stage, but after an August 29 performance in St. Louis, he was hospitalised again for cardiac testing. He was released from hospital on September 2.
Despite the latest cancellations, Richie is expected to return to performing after taking time to recover. His representative has said that he will be back on stage soon, while his remaining Las Vegas performances beginning October 14 are still listed as scheduled.
