Former US President Barack Obama is heading to Georgia on Wednesday to campaign for Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Keisha Lance Bottoms ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Obama will join Ossoff, the incumbent Georgia senator, and Bottoms, the former Atlanta mayor who is running for governor, as Democrats seek to strengthen their position in the state.
The former president has stepped up his campaigning in recent weeks, appearing at rallies in Ohio and Michigan, where Democrats are competing in closely contested Senate races.
During an earlier appearance in Ohio, Obama mocked President Donald Trump’s White House renovations, joking that the building looked like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory”.
The remark prompted a response from Trump and drew attention to the restaurant chain.
In Georgia, Ossoff is seeking re-election against Republican congressman Mike Collins.
Recent polling suggests Ossoff holds a comfortable lead over his Republican challenger.
The senator has also attracted attention as a possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Meanwhile, Bottoms faces a tighter contest as she attempts to win Georgia’s governor’s office for the Democrats.
Obama’s visit comes as both parties intensify their campaigning ahead of the November midterms, with control of Congress and several state governments at stake.
