Apple TV’s ‘Ascension’ taps Bill Nighy for mystery role
Bill Nighy, a veteran actor, has been attached to director Alfonso Cuarón’s forthcoming horror thriller series, Ascension, that is set to stream on Apple TV.
According to Variety, it’s unclear what role the actor, known for Love Actually and The Pirates of the Caribbean, will play.
Inspired by the novel Last Days by Adam Nevill, the series logline reads, “Rose (Balfe), a relentless documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother, is brilliant at uncovering others’ truths but struggling to resolve her own.”
“When Rose begins a project on a mysterious 20th-century cult known as the Church of Ascension, she finds unexpected refuge in its teachings – until she discovers something far more insidious beneath,” the synopsis states.
The series executive producers include Esperanto Filmoj’s Gabriela Rodriguez, Richard Schwartz, Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayde, with Anonymous will produce the show.
In addition, Nighy has been tapped for a guest star in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season two, set to air at Paramount.
Beyond this, the British star’s other credits include Ride or Die and Lazarus at Amazon and The Man Who Fell to Earth at Showtime and now Paramount+.
Besides television, Nighy won an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nod for his 2023 film Living.
