An American Airlines flight bound for Chicago was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport shortly after takeoff early Friday.
American Airlines Flight 1009 departed LAX at around midnight before returning to the airport at approximately 12:45 AM, less than an hour into its journey.
Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed the aircraft travelling east from Los Angeles before turning around over California’s Coachella Valley.
American Airlines said the pilots decided to return after an indicator light warned that the aircraft’s system would not be able to detect hazardous weather conditions ahead.
The flight landed safely back at LAX, with no injuries reported.
Passengers were rebooked on another flight scheduled to depart for Chicago at 8:00 AM on Friday.
The incident comes amid heightened attention on aviation safety and flight disruptions in the United States.
American Airlines has not reported any additional problems with the aircraft or provided further details about the incident.
