US officials unveil foreign influence case against Arcadia Mayor

LOS ANGELES: Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang abruptly resigned after US federal prosecutors unveiled explosive allegations accusing her of secretly operating as an undeclared agent for the Chinese government, triggering fresh concerns over foreign influence within American political institutions.

According to federal court documents the 58-year-old official has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge related to acting on behalf of a foreign government without formally notifying US authorities, a violation considered a serious breach of federal law.

Investigators alleged that Wang spent years running a platform called “U.S. News Center,” which publicly presented itself as a local news outlet but was allegedly used to amplify pro-Beijing narratives and political messaging directed by Chinese officials.

Prosecutors claimed Wang maintained covert coordination with Chinese government representatives and reportedly altered published material based on their instructions. In one exchange cited in court filings, Wang allegedly replied, “Thank you leader,” after making edits requested by a Chinese official.

Federal authorities described the revelations as deeply alarming, warning that covert foreign influence operations pose a direct threat to democratic institutions and public trust.

First Assistant US Attorney Essayli stated that individuals who secretly advance the interests of foreign governments while operating inside the United States undermine the foundations of democracy and national integrity.

Officials further revealed that Wang’s alleged ties to Chinese authorities were never publicly disclosed before her election as mayor in 2022.

FBI Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky said the case highlights growing concerns surrounding hidden foreign influence efforts inside the US political system.

“By her own admission, Eileen Wang secretly served the interests of the Chinese government,” he stated, adding that federal agencies remain committed to identifying and prosecuting individuals accused of covertly influencing American democracy on behalf of foreign powers.
