US military transport plane makes mysterious landing in Moscow

A US military transport aircraft landed in Moscow on Tuesday, sparking questions over the purpose of the unusual flight and who was on board.

Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III arriving at Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport shortly after 10:00 AM local time.

The US military aircraft had taken off from Riga, Latvia, around two hours earlier, according to the tracking data.

The plane’s journey reportedly began in the United States on Sunday and FlightRadar24 data showed it departing from the US Air Force’s Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly before 5:00 PM ET.

No explanation for the aircraft’s presence in Russia was immediately available.

NBC reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not have information about the aircraft and US military officials, the White House and the US embassy in Moscow did not respond to questions about the purpose of the flight either.

It remains unclear who was travelling aboard the C-17 or whether the aircraft’s arrival was connected to diplomatic, military or logistical activity.
