Ukraine extends martial law as war with Russia continues

Ukraine has extended martial law and general mobilization until January 29, 2027 as war with Russia continues.

The approval of the extension comes from Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhnova Rad which voted on Monday. According to data published by Rada, 293 lawmakers voted in the favor of extending martial law.

Following a proposal from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian parliament fast-tracked and approved an extension of martial law and general mobilization, marking the 21st time lawmakers have done so.

General mobilization remains legally in force, allowing military authorities to draft eligible citizens and maintain troop strength along the front lines.

The ban prohibiting most Ukrainian men between the ages of 23 and 60 from leaving the country remains active.

Under martial law, the Constitution of Ukraine does not allow the holding of national elections.

This extension guarantees that no presidential or parliamentary elections will take place before at least January 2027, preventing political campaigning and polling logistics from interfering with defense efforts while active war continues.

During the extension, regional military administrations can enforce curfews, establish checkpoints, inspect identification and restrict public gatherings.

The extension of martial law comes as President Trump asked for holding elections to elect a new president as he thought Zelenskyy cannot make a deal.

Moreover, the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are set to take place in early November.
