The US Supreme Court has rejected President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to overturn a $5 million jury award to writer E. Jean Carroll over sexual abuse and defamation claims.
The court on Monday declined for a second time to hear Trump’s challenge to the verdict, after rejecting his initial appeal in June.
In an unusual move, Trump had asked the Supreme Court to reconsider that decision. Such requests are rarely granted.
Trump has already paid Carroll the $5 million award plus interest, according to NBC News.
The case stems from a federal lawsuit filed by Carroll in New York where she alleged Trump sexually assaulted her in a department store dressing room in 1996.
The jury also found Trump liable for defamation over statements he made after his first presidential term, when he described Carroll’s allegations as a “con job” and “hoax.”
Trump has denied wrongdoing and maintained that he does not know Carroll.
The president is separately appealing a another judgment involving Carroll at the Supreme Court.
She was awarded $83 million in a different defamation case involving statements Trump made while serving his first term as president.
That appeal involves questions over presidential immunity, and the Supreme Court is not expected to consider it until later this year.
