Trump envoy urges FIFA to replace Iran with Italy in World Cup

However, FIFA has maintained that Iran will participate in the tournament as per the official draw.

An envoy to US President Donald Trump has urged world football’s governing body FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at the upcoming World Cup, according to a report by the Financial Times.

US special envoy Paolo Zampolli told the publication it would be a “dream” to see four-time champions Italy national football team participate in the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Italy recently failed to qualify after losing a playoff to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The report suggests the proposal may also be linked to diplomatic efforts to mend ties between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni following disagreements over comments related to the Iran conflict.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and (FIFA President) Gianni Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup. I’m an Italian native and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion,” Zampolli said.

However, FIFA has maintained that Iran will participate in the tournament as per the official draw, despite concerns arising from tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. Infantino reiterated last week that Iran would play “where they are supposed to be.”

Zampolli had previously made a similar proposal ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, suggesting Italy replace Iran, but the idea was not considered.

Zampolli, an Italian-American businessman and socialite, is also known for founding a modelling agency and claims to have introduced Trump to First Lady Melania Trump.
