Tinashe reflects on ‘Popstar’ praise after years of feeling overlooked
Tinashe has opened up about the response to her new album Popstar, saying the praise has been deeply meaningful after years of feeling overlooked in the music industry.
In an emotional message on Instagram, as the album continues to receive attention, the singer reflected on remaining committed to her music despite periods when outside recognition seemed out of reach.
“This moment is a testament to never giving up on yourself,” Tinashe wrote.
She recalled feeling “misunderstood, overlooked, the butt of the joke” while people questioned why she continued making music and whether she would eventually stop.
Tinashe said she eventually stopped seeking awards, accolades and mainstream success after focusing on those achievements became too painful.
That made the reception to Popstar particularly significant.

“After all of these years, to finally be here in this moment and seeing the praise for this project and finally feeling seeeeeen and heard is unbelievably touching,” she wrote, describing the experience as “healing a huge part of me in real time.”
Popstar is currently aiming for a top 10 debut on the Billboard 200, which would give Tinashe her first top 10 album on the chart.
Released on September 25, the 16-track record is her eighth studio album.
The album follows singles including “Too Easy”, “Crash Out”, “Melatonin” and “Pillow Fight”, while its production incorporates hyperpop, dance and R&B influences.
A bonus edition released through iTunes on September 28 included remixes by PinkPantheress, Nick Leon and Umru and subsequently reached No. 1 on the US iTunes chart.
