Thomas Stein has been sentenced to life in prison with a 15-year review after being convicted of the murder of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller in Cape Coral, Florida.
According to WINK News, Stein was sentenced on Friday after a jury found him guilty in May of first-degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with the fatal shooting.
Rincon-Miller was killed two years ago while walking with friends from a cinema to a nearby McDonald’s in Cape Coral.
Before sentencing, Stein sought a new trial in June, but the request was denied, WINK News reported.
Prosecutors said co-defendant Christopher Horne Jr. accepted a plea agreement and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. As part of the deal, Horne testified against Stein during the trial.
According to WINK News, Horne and another witness told the court that Stein fired the shot that killed the teenager.
The jury ultimately found Stein guilty of both first-degree murder and attempted robbery, leading to Friday’s life sentence.
Stein will remain in prison under the life sentence, with a review of his case possible after 15 years, according to the court’s ruling.
