‘The Social Reckoning’ gets Facebook whistleblower’s medical condition right
Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee known for leaking the company’s internal documents, has a medical condition she says is for the public good.
It is, as she described it, a vasospastic disorder. In this condition, she explained, “It cuts off the blood flow when it’s about under 83-ish degrees.”
To get this condition portrayed correctly on The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin – who has read Haugen’s memoir – directed Mikey Madison, who plays the Facebook whistleblower, to wear warmers around her wrists and ankles.
Coincidentally, Haugen watched the film in the cinema.
Reflecting on her condition, especially after seeing it on the big screen, she said, “You can either be defined by your limitations or you can learn how to live with them and they fall into the background.”
“It really struck me, having to hold a mirror up. They say art can be a mirror. I was like, ‘Wow, this has impacted my life more than I’ve been willing to really think about it,’” Haugen added.
Beyond that, the former Facebook analyst said she is content with the movie overall. “I’m very, very happy [with] how the movie turned out.”
She further told People, “I really, really respect cinema as an art form and its capabilities to inspire people and help people connect.”
“I know enough to really respect how hard it is to make a movie. I trust Aaron. I trust the process.”
