‘The Social Reckoning’ flops at Box Office as ‘Other Mommy’ debuts with $27.5m
‘The Social Reckoning’ has struggled at the North American box office, earning just $5.5m during its opening weekend
The Social Reckoning has struggled at the North American box office, earning just $5.5 million during its opening weekend, while Jessica Chastain’s horror film Other Mommy claimed the top spot with a $27.5 million debut.
According to Variety, the latest box-office figures highlight the contrasting performances of the two new releases, with Other Mommy exceeding expectations and Aaron Sorkin’s follow-up to The Social Network falling short of its projected opening.
Directed by Rob Savage, Other Mommy stars Chastain in dual roles as a mother and a sinister doppelganger haunting her young daughter. The supernatural horror film earned $27.5 million from 3,365 theatres across North America, despite receiving disappointing reviews from critics and audiences.
Produced on a reported budget of $19 million, the film also collected approximately $17.6 million internationally across 50 markets, bringing its worldwide opening to around $45.2 million. Its theatrical performance provides a boost for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, although its poor audience reception could affect its performance in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, The Social Reckoning opened with $5.5 million from 2,606 theatres, placing it well behind the horror release. The film is written and directed by Sorkin and serves as a follow-up to his acclaimed 2010 drama The Social Network, which explored the creation of Facebook.
The new film centres on whistleblower Frances Haugen and the controversy surrounding Facebook’s internal documents, which exposed concerns about the platform’s impact on society. Jeremy Strong stars as Mark Zuckerberg, with Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White also appearing in the cast.
The film’s opening marks a significant decline compared with The Social Network, which debuted with approximately $22.6 million in North America in 2010. With a reported production budget of around $30 million, The Social Reckoning now faces the challenge of attracting audiences through word of mouth and its subsequent theatrical run.
The film also received a B- CinemaScore from opening-weekend audiences, while critical reception remained mixed. Its performance reflects the difficulties faced by dramas dealing with contemporary political and social issues in attracting a broad theatrical audience.
Elsewhere at the box office, Verity earned approximately $11.5 million in its second weekend, while Resident Evil collected $8.4 million. Heart of the Beast followed with $7.1 million.
Although Other Mommy has secured the weekend’s leading position, its reception suggests that a strong opening does not necessarily guarantee sustained box-office success. For The Social Reckoning, the modest debut puts greater pressure on its international release and continued audience interest as it attempts to build momentum beyond its first weekend.
