‘The Shards’ Season 1 ending explained: What we know about Season 2

The finale leaves the Trawler mystery unresolved, while producer Brad Simpson discusses the possibility of Season 2

The Shards Season 1 finale leaves several major questions unanswered, including the identity of the Trawler and who pushed Terry Schaffer from his balcony.

In Episode 9, “Stairway to Heaven”, Terry, played by Wes Bentley, is pushed from a balcony during a party.

However, Terry survives the fall, leaving open the possibility that he could identify the person responsible if the FX drama returns.

The finale also leaves the identity of the Trawler unresolved.

The series takes a different approach from Bret Easton Ellis’ novel by extending the central mystery rather than providing a definitive answer.

The show’s executive producer Brad Simpson told Decider that The Shards was originally discussed as a limited series, but the creative team began considering a longer run as the series developed.

“You know, we originally [had] been talking about this as a limited series,” Simpson said. “I think that as we cast these actors and as the writers started writing, it felt like we were going to have something that if people liked, we were gonna want to do for more than one series.”

Simpson also explained why the series deliberately avoided reaching the novel’s conclusion during its first season.

“Hopefully people will enjoy it and we won’t have gotten to the end of the book, which may not even be the end of our series also, but be able to come back for a second season and do the same deliberate thing. Let’s look at the next couple months after the season ends.”

It now remains to be seen, whether FX will confirm a renewal of The Shards for Season 2.
