Suspected gas leak explosion kills 3 women in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: Three women died in a suspected gas leak explosion at an apartment in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, according to Rescue 1122.

Usman Gujjar, the rescue service’s spokesperson, told Dawn that the explosion appeared to have been caused by a gas leak. However, a team of forensic experts had reached the site of the incident to determine the exact nature of the incident, he said.

Meanwhile, a Rescue 1122 statement, which confirmed the casualties, said one woman found unconscious at the scene had been taken to a hospital where she was being provided medical assistance.

The statement said the incident took place in Bahria Town Phase VII, and two emergency vehicles as well as five rescue personnel were sent to the site, following which a search and rescue operation was initiated.

Today’s incident follows another explosion that took place in a house in Islamabad on Sunday, in which eight people, including a newly-wed couple, lost their lives.

Twelve people were injured in the explosion, which officials said seemed to have been caused by a gas cylinder, but a thorough investigation would determine the exact cause.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had ordered an inquiry into the explosion.
