At least 12 people have died and several others have been injured as firefighters continue battling one of southern Spain’s worst wildfires near Los Gallardos in the province of Almería.
According to CNN, more than 460 emergency workers have been deployed to tackle the blaze, while at least 1,405 residents have been evacuated from their homes.
Regional emergency minister Antonio Sanz described it as “The most devastating fire to date in our region.”
Sanz said several victims attempted to escape through a dry river bed, which became a deadly “trap.”
According to CNN, four people died inside a vehicle while seven others were killed trying to flee on foot. Authorities said some of those who died were foreign nationals.
Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said at least eight people were injured, including four who were seriously hurt.
He also confirmed officials had received three formal reports of missing people.
The wildfire comes as Spain continues to experience extreme heat during one of Europe’s hottest summers on record.
Scientists say hotter and drier conditions linked to climate change are increasing the risk of large and destructive wildfires across the region.
According to CNN, more than 3,000 hectares have already burned. Firefighters remain at the scene as efforts continue to contain the blaze.
