A shooting incident at a high school in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa province, southeastern Türkiye, left 16 people injured after a former student opened fire and later took his own life.
According to international media reports, Governor Hasan Şıldak said the 18-year-old attacker used a shotgun to carry out indiscriminate firing. He then hid inside the school building before later shooting himself with the same weapon.
Among the injured were 10 students, four teachers, a canteen worker, and a police officer. Five of the injured were reported to be in critical condition and were shifted to a hospital in the provincial capital.
The governor stated that the attacker had no prior criminal record. He added that the school had been considered secure, and no permanent police personnel were stationed there. He described the incident as an “isolated case.”
A student eyewitness said the attacker entered a classroom and started firing without saying anything. He fired four to five shots, after which two students managed to escape by jumping out of a window.
School shootings are rare in Türkiye. Following the incident, police cordoned off the area, launched an operation, and safely evacuated all students from the premises.
