Sandra Bullock shares how her children processed Bryan Randall’s ALS

Sandra Bullock is sharing how she approached conversations with her children about her longtime partner Bryan Randall’s health during his three-year journey with ALS.

Speaking on the SmartLess podcast, Bullock, 62, explained that her two children, ages 16 and 12, were fully aware of what Randall was going through, especially as his condition progressed. 

She shared that both children were perceptive and noticed changes in his physical health and behaviour over time.

“Eventually, once there is a situation where you’re bedridden, we all have to go there,” she said. “It was in my house, and I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it.”

She continued, “They could see. They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids. Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behaviour that changes in all of us.”

Bullock explained that she approached these conversations by allowing her children to guide how much they wanted to be involved, rather than pushing them into a specific role. 

She shared that her son eventually recognised that being closely involved wasn’t emotionally healthy for him and chose to step back, while still offering support in other ways

“Louis handled it very differently than Laila. About two years before Bryan passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around,” she said. “So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, ‘You know what? I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age. My job [was] to be both at that time.”

Bullock said she respected his decision and wanted him to still experience a normal childhood despite the difficult circumstances at home.

“I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f***** anyway and people are suffering everywhere,” Bullock added. 

“So me asking for help, I felt the guilt because everyone else was already suffering. But, he chose to just be there, and support and help me on the things that were easy for me. But, he smartly disengaged himself and said, this is a safer space for me to sit. And I said, absolutely you go.”

She explained that her daughter had a different experience, staying more closely involved for a longer period of time before eventually asking for some distance as well. 

Bullock said she made sure to honour her daughter’s wishes while remaining present and available if she ever wanted to visit.

Bullock and Randall began their relationship in 2015, and he passed away in 2023 after his battle with ALS. 

After his death, sources previously shared that Bullock focused on healing and spending time with her children before gradually returning to work.
