Rupert Grint returns as Ron Weasley for Broadway run of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’

Rupert Grint is returning to the role that made him a household name, with the actor set to reprise Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. The announcement was made on J K Rowling’s official website on August 26, confirming a limited 17 week engagement at New York’s Lyric Theatre.

Grint will begin performances on Tuesday, February 2, 2027, with the engagement scheduled to continue through Sunday, May 30, 2027. The Broadway return will give audiences another opportunity to see the actor inhabit Ron Weasley, the character he first portrayed when he was 11 years old in the Harry Potter film series.

For Grint, the return carries a particularly personal significance. In a statement published alongside the announcement, he reflected on how closely Ron has remained connected to his life and career since his childhood.

“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life,” Grint said.

The actor also pointed to the unusual experience of returning to a role that shaped his early career while approaching the character from a very different stage of his own life. Grint is now a father, a detail he said gives the reunion with Ron a new dimension.

“There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers,” he added, describing the experience as both familiar and new.

Grint originally played Ron throughout all eight films in the main Harry Potter franchise, beginning with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 2001 and concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 in 2011. His portrayal of Harry Potter’s loyal best friend became one of the defining performances of his early career.

His Broadway return also continues a recent connection between the original film cast and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy opposite Grint in the films, is currently appearing as Draco in the Broadway production. Felton’s engagement is scheduled to run until Sunday, January 3, 2027, according to Rowling’s website.

That means Grint will step into the production shortly after Felton’s scheduled departure, creating a significant crossover between two actors closely associated with the original film franchise. Grint’s 17 week run will then carry the production through the spring of 2027.

The Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on the stage play written by Jack Thorne from an original story by Thorne, J K Rowling and John Tiffany. The story takes place after the events of the original Harry Potter books and follows Harry Potter as an adult, alongside his son Albus and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius.

Ticket access for Grint’s engagement will begin with an early access period. Fans can sign up for the presale ahead of tickets becoming available on Tuesday, September 1 at 11am ET. General ticket sales are scheduled to begin Wednesday, September 2.
