President, PM stress dignity and fair wages on Labour Day

On Labour Day 2026 Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to the working class, jointly acknowledging their sacrifices, resilience, and vital role in shaping Pakistan’s economic and social progress.

In their separate messages both leaders emphasized that fair wages, dignity at work, and safe working environments are fundamental rights of every worker. They noted that the global labour struggle particularly the legacy of the Haymarket Affair remains a lasting symbol of justice, human dignity, and workers’ rights across the world.

President Zardari highlighted that the principle of “eight hours work, eight hours rest, and eight hours personal life” continues to serve as a foundation of modern labour standards. Referring to the Constitution of Pakistan 1973 he said it guarantees protection of workers’ rights and reflects the state’s commitment to eliminating exploitation in all forms.

He described Pakistan’s labour force as the backbone of national development, stressing that sustainable economic growth and social stability are directly linked to the dignity and strength of workers. He also reaffirmed the government’s resolve to eliminate forced labour, bonded labour, and child labour as key national priorities.

The president further acknowledged the important role of overseas Pakistanis in supporting the national economy through remittances and global engagement, calling for stronger policies to ensure their protection and safe working conditions abroad.

He also emphasized investment in human capital, skill development, and vocational training, along with greater inclusion of women and youth in the workforce.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his message said Pakistan joins the global community in observing Labour Day with renewed commitment to workers’ welfare and rights. He described workers including farmers, labourers, artisans, professionals, and overseas Pakistanis as the backbone of national productivity and economic continuity.

He praised overseas Pakistanis as “national ambassadors” whose contributions significantly strengthen the economy. The prime minister also highlighted ongoing efforts under the National Skills Development Policy to modernize the workforce through training, certification, and language programs aligned with international job markets.

He further noted the role of welfare institutions such as the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution and the Workers Welfare Fund which provide pensions, healthcare, housing, and education support to workers and their families.

Shehbaz Sharif urged coordinated action between government institutions, industry, and the private sector to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for labour rights, stressing that protecting workers’ dignity is a collective responsibility.

Concluding his message, he said Pakistan’s development is inseparable from its labour force and expressed confidence that workers will continue to represent the country with dedication, skill, and pride at both national and global levels.
