ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting at Aiwan-e-Sadr and discussed key national issues, including domestic and foreign affairs, the regional situation and ongoing counterterrorism operations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Senator Sherry Rehman and Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan also attended the meeting.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated President Zardari on Independence Day and briefed him on the trilateral peace agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed in Makkah.
President Zardari expressed his best wishes for the effective implementation of the agreement and appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
The president and prime minister also paid tribute to the professional capabilities and sacrifices of Pakistan’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies.
They reaffirmed their resolve to completely eliminate the threat of terrorism from the country and ensure national security and stability.

Earlier, Pakistan’s top political leadership called for stability, reforms and global peace on Friday, Aug.14, as the nation marked its 79th Independence Day with prayers, national ceremonies and messages highlighting security, economic progress and unity.
The nation celebrated Independence Day with zeal and fervor. The day began with a 31 gun salute in Islamabad and a 21 gun salute in the provincial capitals. A change of guard ceremony was also held at the “Mazar-e-Quaid” mausoleum in Karachi.
President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement and those who sacrificed their homes, security and livelihoods for the country.
Zardari said independence was not only a historic achievement but also a responsibility for every generation. He said Pakistan must become stronger, safer and more prosperous through continued work.
