Pete Hegseth rejects report he is eyeing 2028 presidential election

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has denied a report that he is considering running for president in 2028, calling the claim “100% false”.

NBC News reported that Hegseth had discussed a potential presidential campaign with close friends and associates, citing two people familiar with the matter.

Hegseth rejected the report on X, accusing NBC News of relying on anonymous sources despite being told the claims were inaccurate.

“My only job: Make @DeptofWar Great Again,” Hegseth wrote.

According to NBC News, Hegseth and his wife Jennifer have discussed a possible campaign for months and believe his conservative views and popularity among President Donald Trump’s MAGA base could help him mount a White House bid.

The report also said Hegseth’s recent appearance at the Iowa State Fair had increased confidence among his team.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell also denied the claims.

“Secretary Hegseth is not running for President, and his main priority is leading the War Department. All other speculation is foolish,” Parnell told Newsweek.

Speculation over the 2028 Republican presidential field is growing, with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio among the prominent names discussed as potential candidates.
