US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing growing criticism over the Iran war following Republicans’ defeat in the midterm elections, despite continued support from US President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, some Republicans believe Hegseth should be held responsible for the unpopular conflict, which has been blamed for the party’s election losses.
“If the president is serious about anyone taking responsibility for it, it’s Pete Hegseth,” a Republican close to the White House told CNN.
Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has filed eight impeachment accusations against Hegseth and plans to force a House vote.
Trump, however, defended his defence secretary when asked Wednesday whether he was considering replacing him.
“No, I think he’s doing a very good job,” Trump told reporters.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis also warned that Hegseth had “a reckoning” coming, citing tensions with lawmakers over defence spending.
Democrats have pledged investigations into Hegseth’s Pentagon leadership, including his handling of the Iran war, removal of senior military officials and military operations in Latin America.
