Nine killed and 13 injured in Türkiye school shooting

A school shooting in Turkiye’s southern province of Kahramanmaraş has left at least nine people dead and 13 others injured, according to international media reports.

Turkish authorities said six of the injured are in critical condition. Following the incident, all schools across the province have been closed for two days.

Initial reports suggest that among the dead are three students, a teacher, and the suspected attacker, who was also a student. It remains unclear whether the attacker died by suicide or was killed in a police response.

The provincial governor stated that the attacker was an eighth-grade student who entered two classrooms and opened fire.

The weapon used in the attack is believed to have belonged to his father, a former police officer.

Turkey’s Justice Minister said that an investigation has been launched and a high-level committee has been formed to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Earlier, a shooting incident at a high school in the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa province, southeastern Türkiye, left 16 people injured after a former student opened fire and later took his own life.

According to international media reports, Governor Hasan Şıldak said the 18-year-old attacker used a shotgun to carry out indiscriminate firing. He then hid inside the school building before later shooting himself with the same weapon.

Among the injured were 10 students, four teachers, a canteen worker, and a police officer. Five of the injured were reported to be in critical condition and were shifted to a hospital in the provincial capital.
