New Zealand declares emergency as severe flooding hits Wellington

New Zealand has declared a state of emergency in its capital city Wellington as heavy downpouring and flash flooding inundated the country’s North Island.

In the wake of torrential rain, the residents in low-lying areas are also instructed to leave their places on Monday and move to temporary shelter as rain is forecasted for the next day and half.

According to media reports, the deluge caused flash flooding, leading to road closures and landslides in the city’s central business district and southern suburbs.

A search was underway for a man living at a property that was flooded in the suburb of Karori, New Zealand police said in a statement.

Moreover, some schools have also closed their campuses and flights at Wellington Airport have been cancelled given the unfavourable weather conditions.

Wellington received a record-breaking 77mm of rain in less than one hour, as reported by Mayor Andrew Little.

“The wild weather continues. We’ve had flooding, slips and evacuations… The flooding has been strong enough to move cars, and many manhole covers have been lifted,” Little said in a video published on his Facebook page.

Residents are also advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel and try to find suitable relocation for at least the next 24 hours.

Additionally to facilitate the people, the government has set up the Wellington City Mission for those who need assistance and shelter.
