Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly travelled to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday and met President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, according to reports citing Israeli sources.
An Israeli source familiar with the visit told CNN that Iran dominated the talks, as Israel and the UAE deepen security cooperation during the ongoing Iran war.
The visit comes one month before Israel’s October 27 election and amid controversy over reports that bin Zayed warned Netanyahu about a possible major Hamas operation before the October 7, 2023, attack.
Netanyahu has repeatedly denied receiving such a warning and has accused opponents of using the reports against him politically.
The UAE previously said it “does not comment on media stories or speculation regarding conversations between government leaders.”
The UAE has also said relevant intelligence “has been and continues to be communicated between the relevant entities.”
Israel and the UAE have strengthened security ties during the Iran war. Netanyahu’s office previously claimed he secretly visited the UAE in March, although the UAE denied that account at the time.
Netanyahu has never made a publicly acknowledged official visit to the UAE.
