Another disturbing turn in Nancy Guthrie’s disapperance case as authorities have to issue a statement.
The message entails a warning to the public to stay alert and not to buy the scammers’ new scheme to cash in on the 84-year-old’s disappearance.
The buzz began after fake social media posts surfaced with QR codes attached, asking netizens to send money, which would, in turn, go toward the investigation.
Only these posts were false.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department had to release a statement, stating, “The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is aware of posts circulating about the Guthrie Investigation that include a QR code requesting money.”
PCSD will never ask for money related to this case, or any investigation,” the department stressed.
“Please do not send money to people you do not know or scan QR codes requesting payment. If you see one of these posts, ignore it and report it,” the message read.
The new fraud attempt is not the first time the scammers have tried to milk the attention tied to Nancy’s investigation.
In relation to the case, the FBI arrested Derrick Anthony Callella last February on the allegation of sending fake ransom notes to the Guthrie family.
Nancy went missing from his home near Tucson, Arizona, on Feb 1.
