Meghan Markle spent her first birthday as a royal in this surprising way

Meghan Markle married Prince Harry on May 19, 2018. Less than three months later, she celebrated her first birthday as the Duchess of Sussex when she turned 37 on Aug. 4.

Instead of marking the occasion with a private celebration, Meghan spent her birthday attending the wedding of one of Harry’s close friends, where the prince served as best man.

According to Vanity Fair, the couple attended the wedding of Charlie van Straubenzee, who is also a close friend of Prince William. Us Weekly reported that Meghan “looked radiant” as she spent her birthday celebrating the couple’s special day.

Charlie van Straubenzee married Daisy Jenks during an afternoon ceremony in Surrey, England. Meghan wore a Club Monaco color-block shirtdress, a Philip Treacy hat, Aquazzura pumps, a knotted belt and carried a Kayu clutch.

Harry wore a traditional morning suit and spent time talking with other guests. He and van Straubenzee have been friends since childhood after attending Ludgrove School together. Van Straubenzee also served as an usher at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel a few months earlier.

Us Weekly also reported that Harry made time for Meghan during the celebrations, and the couple was seen holding hands as they walked through the grounds of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Frensham.

The year before, Meghan celebrated her 36th birthday privately with Harry in Botswana, where the couple spent their third date in 2016 and where their relationship grew stronger.

A year after her first birthday as a married royal, Meghan celebrated her 38th birthday in 2019 with a new addition to the family. By then, she and Harry had welcomed their son, Prince Archie, who was born May 6, 2019.
