Marvel announces Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and David Jonsson as Black Panther at Comic-Con
Both the ‘Ghost Rider’ film and ‘Black Panther 3’ are scheduled for release in 2028
Marvel Studios has confirmed Ryan Gosling as the next Ghost Rider and David Jonsson as the new Black Panther during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, unveiling two major casting announcements for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gosling, 45, will headline a standalone Ghost Rider film, which is scheduled for release in 2028.
The three-time Academy Award nominee reunites with director Shawn Levy and writer Jonathan Tropper following their upcoming collaboration on Star Wars: Starfighter.
“As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a long time,” Gosling told the audience after his casting was revealed.
Levy also addressed fans at the event, reflecting on his previous Comic-Con appearance before praising the actor. “Gosling is the absolute s**t. I say that with tremendous respect. We spent a lot of time last year making ‘Starfighter,’ and the opportunity as Ryan started talking about this character, I was like, ‘Bro let’s ride.’ We’ll see you in 2028!”
The role was previously played by Nicolas Cage in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Marvel also announced that David Jonsson, 32, will take on the mantle of Black Panther in Black Panther 3, portraying an adult version of T’Challa’s son. Director Ryan Coogler confirmed the film is set for release on December 15, 2028.
“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and privilege and the blessing to join,” Jonsson said on stage as fans chanted “Wakanda”.
The character was introduced in the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020.
Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds made an unannounced appearance in the Comic-Con crowd wearing Deadpool’s grey X-Force suit, prompting further speculation about his future in the Marvel franchise.
