Marlon Wayans’ ‘Scary Movie 6’ comeback debuts with 32% on Rotten Tomatoes

Original stars Marlon and Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris & Regina Hall return for the franchise’s first release in 13 years
The long-awaited return of the Scary Movie franchise has received a mixed response from critics and audiences, with Scary Movie 6 debuting with a low score on review aggregation platforms ahead of its cinema release.
The latest instalment in the horror parody series has opened with a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes following early screenings. The film marks the franchise’s first release in 13 years and reunites original stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris and Regina Hall.
The reboot, officially titled Scary Movie, satirises a range of horror films released over the past decade, including Ma, M3GAN, Weapons and Sinners.
Despite the return of the franchise’s original cast and its extensive list of horror references, early reactions suggest audiences have been divided over its humour and storyline.
At the time of reporting, the film also held a score of 37 on Metacritic and an average rating of 3.0 on Letterboxd, indicating a generally lukewarm reception.
Several early reviewers criticised the film’s comedy. One Rotten Tomatoes user wrote, “Scary Movie 2026’s joke success rate is unfortunately on the low side, feeling like maybe 3 or 4 out of every 10 jokes hit the mark.”
Another review described it as, “A dreadful reboot that stumbles through tired, miserable ideas for comedy with no invention and little enthusiasm.”
Ahead of the release, Wayans acknowledged that the film could divide opinion due to its approach to comedy.
Scary Movie 6 arrives in cinemas on June 5 with a runtime of 95 minutes.
