Margot Robbie’s return for a Barbie sequel is reportedly in question after negotiations between its stars and Warner Bros. stalled.
Robbie, 36, is part of the core creative team behind a potential follow-up film, alongside director Greta Gerwig, co-writer Noah Baumbach, and actor Ryan Gosling.
Warner Bros. has made several offers over the past few years, but no final agreement has been reached, per Variety.
One source described the studio’s most recent offer as historic in scale, while another source pushed back on that characterisation, saying the individual salaries involved weren’t necessarily record-breaking.
The original Barbie film became a massive global success after its 2023 release, earning over $1.4 billion worldwide.
Robbie starred in and helped produce the film, while Gerwig directed and co-wrote the script with Baumbach. Gosling’s performance also earned him an Oscar nomination.
None of the four key creatives were contractually required to return for a sequel, which has led to new negotiations after the film’s success.
Reports suggest the current disagreement involves both upfront pay and long-term earnings from the film’s future profits.
Robbie is currently also working on other major projects, including a period drama adaptation and an upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel with Bradley Cooper.
These negotiations are unfolding as Warner Bros. Discovery faces its own uncertainty, including a delayed multi-billion-dollar acquisition tied to an ongoing antitrust case.
The situation also affects Mattel, which owns the Barbie brand. Reports indicate Warner Bros. has a limited window to move forward with a sequel before rights could potentially return to Mattel.
Gerwig and Baumbach reportedly already have an idea for a sequel, but are keeping details private until contracts are finalised.
