London train strike disrupts commuters as multiple lines shut down

LONDON: Severe disruption continues across the city as a train strike has brought parts of the transport network to a standstill, leaving commuters facing major difficulties.

According to international media reports, the first phase of the strike by the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT Union) is scheduled to continue until 12 noon local time today. Several stations and rail lines have been temporarily closed as a result.

Authorities at Transport for London have urged the union to call off further industrial action and return to negotiations to minimize public inconvenience.

The union has warned that if its demands are not met, further strikes may follow next week. It has also announced a second phase of industrial action, which is expected to last 24 hours on Thursday.

Reports indicate that the ongoing strike has led to increased demand for e-bikes and a sharp rise in taxi fares across the city, as commuters seek alternative transport options.

The dispute reportedly stems from disagreements over proposed changes in working patterns, including a four-day workweek policy introduced by the transport department. The RMT Union is demanding a four-day working week with a total of 32 working hours per week.

Meanwhile, the disruption continues to impact daily life in the British capital as negotiations remain ongoing between the two sides.
