A spokesperson for the Israeli army revealed that Major General Yifat Tomer Yerushalmi, the army’s chief military prosecutor, submitted her resignation this morning to Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, amid ongoing investigations into the leak of a video documenting assault and torture of a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teyman prison.
The Israeli military’s top legal officer, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, resigned on Friday following the leak of a video showing soldiers brutally beating a Palestinian prisoner at the Sde Teiman detention facility in southern Israel.
According to Israeli media, Tomer-Yerushalmi submitted her resignation during a meeting with Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir.
Her decision comes amid mounting outrage over the footage, which surfaced in August 2024 and drew widespread condemnation from human rights organizations.
In a statement cited by Yedioth Ahronoth, Tomer-Yerushalmi acknowledged responsibility for authorizing the release of certain materials to the media, saying it was done “to repel false propaganda against law enforcement authorities in the military.”
The Israeli army confirmed that its Military Police Criminal Investigation Division has launched a criminal probe into the leak of the Sde Teiman video, including possible involvement by members of the Military Advocate General’s Office.
“The investigation will address both the release of the video and the conduct of those involved in the incident,” the army said in a statement Wednesday.
The leaked footage depicts soldiers dragging a Palestinian detainee, lying face down, before surrounding him with riot shields and beating him. The prisoner was later hospitalized with severe injuries.
The Sde Teiman facility has long faced criticism from human rights groups and Israeli civil society organizations, which have documented reports of abuse, inhumane conditions, and the detention of Palestinians without charge. Calls to shut down the site have intensified following the latest revelations.
The video has reignited debate over Israel’s treatment of Palestinian detainees from Gaza and the accountability of military personnel accused of human rights violations.
