Iran warns of retaliation after accusing US of attacking vessel during fragile ceasefire

Iran has accused the United States of violating a ceasefire agreement and warned it will retaliate following a reported incident involving a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

Iranian state media, citing a spokesperson for Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya military command, said the ship was travelling from China to Iran when it came under fire.

“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military.”

The allegation comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with a fragile ceasefire between the two countries set to expire later this week.

At the same time, Iran has continued to restrict shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global trade route that carries around one fifth of the world’s oil supply.

The United States has not yet publicly responded to Iran’s latest accusation.

Analysts warn that further escalation could undermine efforts to extend the ceasefire and increase instability across the region.
