Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi slammed Trump’s newly announced “Economic D-Day” campaign against Tehran.
On Thursday, Araghchi said that the new “crushing” economic sanctions imposed by the Trump administration will only bring more defeat to the United States and deepen the hostility and distrust between Tehran and Washington.
Taking to X, the Iranian FM posted, “The so-called ‘Economic D-Day’ is a diversion from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs.”
“Doubling down on failed policies will only bring further defeat and enmity of Iranians,” he said, adding that what he called US “economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.”
Araghchi’s remarks come after President Trump on Wednesday launched “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country” while describing this campaign as “economic warfare and isolation on unprecedented scale.”
Besides Iran, Trump also threatened other countries including Gulf allies with tougher economic sanctions if they try to help and do business with Iran.
“ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences,” Trump wrote on Truth Social post.
Without specifying what punishment countries could face, Trump continued, “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies – It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”
Trump’s retaliatory actions against Iran come after the expiration of a memorandum of understanding in which both countries failed to secure a permanent agreement to end months-long conflict.
Under the new measures, the US would cut off or restrict financial and commercial channels supporting Iran aimed at crippling Tehran’s already struggling economy.
Trump’s new measures seem to escalate the US pressure campaign, started in April, which aims to sanctions any foreign banks or firms that support Tehran financially in any way.
On Wednesday, UAE imposed an indefinite and total ban on all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran.
The indefinite trade embargo comes after the Iranian forces fired two ballistic missiles at the UAE, which the UAE military claimed were targeting maritime traffic.
