According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired at around 4pm local time
Filmmaker Michael Mann was taken to hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, October 31.
The 83-year-old director, best known for films including Heat, Collateral and The Last of the Mohicans, suffered what his representative described as a superficial injury after a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” his spokesperson said in a statement. “He was treated and is being released.”
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired at around 4pm local time. The investigation determined that the shooting was accidental, and Mann was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The incident reportedly took place at The Range LA, where Mann had been practising target shooting. The director is said to have been an experienced shooter for decades.
Mann is currently developing a sequel to his acclaimed 1995 crime film Heat, which starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The follow-up is expected to begin filming early next year.
The original Heat is widely regarded as one of Mann’s most influential works, known for its detailed portrayal of a Los Angeles bank robbery and its celebrated downtown shootout sequence.
Mann’s other film credits include Thief, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Public Enemies and Ferrari. He also served as executive producer on the influential television series Miami Vice before directing its 2006 film adaptation.
The filmmaker has received four Academy Award nominations during his career, including for The Insider and The Aviator, and remains active in Hollywood.
