KARACHI: The green-and-white flags are out, markets are busy and cities are lighting up as Pakistan gets ready to celebrate its 79th Independence Day on Friday, with families shopping for decorations and authorities putting final touches on ceremonies and events across the country.
On the eve of August 14th, national flags and buntings have appeared on rooftops, government buildings, roads and markets. In Islamabad, Parliament House has been decorated with colorful lights ahead of the national celebrations.
Markets across the country are also seeing increased activity as people shop for flags, badges, caps, masks and other items carrying the national colors. Children are particularly interested in green-and-white dresses, bangles, jewelry and shirts featuring the crescent and star.
Many people are buying flags for their cars and motorcycles, while families are also decorating their homes. Children said they were looking forward to celebrating Independence Day with friends and wearing green and white outfits.
Parents said they were using the occasion to teach their children about the importance of independence and the country’s history while encouraging them to take part in the celebrations.
Temporary stalls selling Independence Day merchandise have also reported strong sales as demand rises ahead of Aug. 14.
In Karachi, preparations have been completed for the Independence Day ceremony at Mazar-e-Quaid, where Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nihal Hashmi, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, cabinet members and senior officials are expected to attend.
The ceremony will include the hoisting of the national flag, the laying of a floral wreath at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Fateha.
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi has directed deputy commissioners across the city to arrange Independence Day programs and ensure that the celebrations reflect the importance of the occasion.
The District Administration Central held a special Independence Day event at Jinnah College on Wednesday. Naqvi attended as chief guest, hoisted the national flag and cut an Independence Day cake.
Deputy Commissioner Central Taha Saleem, College Principal Kamran Kazmi, teachers, students and other guests attended the event. Students performed patriotic songs and took part in activities celebrating their country.
Naqvi said young people are an important national asset and will help shape the country’s future. He stressed the importance of education, hard work and good character in building a stronger Pakistan.
Deputy commissioners have been directed to organize Independence Day programs in their districts in coordination with educational institutions and non-governmental organizations.
Authorities have also planned decorations and lighting at major buildings, roads and intersections, while schools and other institutions will hold special programs for the occasion.
Municipal and development agencies have been asked to coordinate the arrangements and help create a festive atmosphere across the city.
As Aug. 14 approaches, the celebrations are already visible in streets and markets, where flags, lights and the country’s green-and-white colors are giving cities a distinctly patriotic look.
