Google Meet’s AI note-taking tool is no longer limited to online meetings. The “Take notes for me” feature, which was previously available only for virtual calls, can now also be used during in-person conversations. Users can simply place their phone on a table and let Gemini record and transcribe the discussion.
According to the Google Workspace blog, the feature is available on Android, the web and iOS. On the mobile app, users can tap the new “Take notes” option next to “New call,” similar to using a small voice recorder.
On the web, users can select a call, click “Take notes for me” and then choose “Start taking notes.” Note-taking sessions can be paused and resumed at any time. Google recommends using the feature for conversations or calls that last at least 15 minutes.
After the session ends, Meet creates a structured Google Doc with topic summaries, key decisions, action items and a full transcript. The document is automatically saved in a dedicated “Google Meet” folder in Google Drive, and users receive a link by email.
The format is similar to the notes Meet already creates for virtual meetings, giving in-person conversations the same type of documentation as scheduled video calls.
The feature is not available to everyone yet. Consumer users need either Google AI Pro or AI Ultra. Workspace users must have Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus or Google AI Pro for Education.
The feature currently supports eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. However, only one language can be selected for each session.
Privacy settings allow users to control whether conversations are recorded and prevent private discussions from being captured. Meeting hosts can also control which users are allowed to use the feature.
Access was first made available to Android users, followed by the web version. The iOS version is expected to arrive in August. As the feature becomes available to more users, Google Meet will increasingly compete with transcription services that offer similar tools for businesses.
