Google has rolled out a major upgrade to its Gmail service, extending end-to-end encryption (E2EE) capabilities to mobile devices, including both Android and iOS.
The update enables users to securely send, receive, and manage encrypted emails directly within the Gmail app, removing reliance on third-party applications or external portals. By integrating encryption natively into the mobile experience Google aims to simplify secure communication without compromising usability.
A key feature of this rollout is its seamless functionality. Encrypted emails are delivered and displayed in the same format as standard messages, ensuring a familiar and intuitive user experience without requiring additional steps from the user.
For recipients who do not use Gmail, Google has ensured accessibility through a secure browser-based interface, allowing them to view and respond to encrypted messages without needing to install the app.
According to Google, users with an enabled E2EE licence can send encrypted emails to recipients across any email service provider.
- Gmail users receive encrypted emails directly within existing conversation threads.
- Non-Gmail recipients can securely access messages through a web interface and respond accordingly.
This model ensures a consistent, secure, and interoperable communication framework across platforms.
Enabling encryption is straightforward. Users can activate the feature by selecting the lock icon while composing an email and choosing the encryption option. File attachments remain fully supported within encrypted communications.
However, availability of the feature is governed by administrative configurations. Organizations must enable access via client-side encryption (CSE) settings within the Admin Console.
At present the feature is limited to Enterprise Plus users, particularly those subscribed to Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus tiers.
Google stated that the expansion reflects its broader strategy to strengthen data protection while maintaining ease of use. The update is designed to help organizations securely manage sensitive information while adhering to compliance standards and data sovereignty requirements.
By bringing advanced encryption directly into mobile workflows, Google is positioning Gmail as a more secure and accessible communication platform for enterprises, businesses, and public sector entities.
