George Clooney backs Callum Turner as potential successor to James Bond role

The search for the next 007 remains one of the most closely watched casting decisions in the film industry

George Clooney has publicly endorsed British actor Callum Turner as a potential successor to James Bond, adding his support to the ongoing discussion surrounding the future of the iconic film franchise.

The Hollywood star, who worked with Turner on the 2023 film The Boys in the Boat, said he believes the actor possesses the qualities needed to take on the role made famous by generations of British performers.

“I hope Callum ends up being the next Bond. I think he would be a great Bond,” Clooney told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s tall and handsome and charming and British, so he’s the perfect guy to do it.”

Clooney also praised Turner’s career choices, suggesting the actor has carefully built his reputation by pursuing distinctive projects rather than prioritising commercial opportunities.

“He hasn’t just gone for the easy paychecks – he’s done really interesting work,” Clooney said. “Somehow Callum has weaved his way through all of the noise and found a place where people look at him and go, ‘There’s something with this young man.’ It’s exciting to watch people saying, ‘That guy – that’s a guy I want to follow and pay attention to.'”

Turner has emerged as one of several actors linked to the role since Daniel Craig’s departure from the franchise. His profile has risen steadily through performances in film and television, including his leading role in The Boys in the Boat, directed by Clooney.

The search for the next 007 remains one of the most closely watched casting decisions in the film industry. Other names regularly associated with the role include Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, both of whom have attracted support from fans and industry observers.

Former Bond director Martin Campbell has previously suggested that producers may favour an actor in their mid-30s for the role.

“So I think you have to have somebody in their thirties, 35, 36, if they’re going to see five films,” Campbell said.

While no official casting announcement has been made, Clooney’s endorsement is likely to increase attention on Turner as speculation over the future of James Bond continues.
