Claude AI goes viral after claims of recovering lost Bitcoin wallet

A viral X thread has ignited major online discussion after claims emerged that Anthropic’s AI chatbot Claude helped recover a Bitcoin wallet worth nearly $400,000 that had reportedly remained inaccessible for years.

The posts were shared by a pseudonymous X user identified as “Cprkrn,” who claimed that Claude assisted in regaining access to a wallet containing approximately 5 BTC that had remained locked for nearly nine years.

According to the user’s claims the wallet identified by an address beginning with “14VJyS”  had shown no activity since 2015 until transactions reportedly resumed this week, attracting significant attention from blockchain observers and cryptocurrency communities.

The thread quickly gained traction on X, amassing millions of views as users debated whether advanced AI systems could meaningfully assist in encrypted data recovery, password reconstruction, and digital forensic analysis.

Screenshots shared online did not indicate that Claude directly bypassed Bitcoin’s cryptographic security. Instead the material suggested that the AI assisted in examining encrypted wallet files and streamlining password recovery efforts by analyzing and organizing stored data.

The user explained that previous recovery attempts using tools such as btcrecover and Hashcat had failed. However the alleged breakthrough occurred after files from an old college computer were uploaded to Claude which reportedly identified a wallet-related file linked to a mnemonic recovery phrase.

Cprkrn further stated that the final password solution proved surprisingly simple, describing it as “the most obvious opening ever,” while revealing that the wallet had remained inaccessible for more than a decade after a password change made years earlier.

Despite the viral attention, cybersecurity and wallet recovery experts have questioned the extent of Claude’s involvement in the process. Several analysts suggested that the AI likely functioned as an advanced organizational and analytical assistant rather than performing any direct cryptographic breakthrough.

One expert described the process as closer to “digital forensic sorting” than actual password cracking or encryption bypassing.

The claims also triggered skepticism across Reddit, where some users argued that the viral narrative exaggerated Claude’s role in the recovery process. Critics maintained that the AI may have simply helped locate and interpret files rather than independently recovering the wallet.

Others noted that growing public fascination with AI technology often leads to inflated perceptions regarding its real-world capabilities, particularly in highly technical fields such as cybersecurity and blockchain recovery.

The viral discussion comes shortly after Anthropic expanded Claude’s capabilities with advanced analytical and security-focused features, further intensifying online debate over the evolving role of artificial intelligence in digital investigations and cyber operations.
