Andrew Scott’s ‘Elsinore’ to receive Ian Charleson Legacy Tribute at Gotham Awards
The tribute will recognise Scott, screenwriter Stephen Beresford, director Simon Stone and the wider production team
Andrew Scott’s biographical drama Elsinore will receive the Gotham Legacy Tribute in honour of Ian Charleson at the 36th annual Gotham Film Awards, recognising the film’s portrayal of the Scottish actor’s life, career and final stage performance.
The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced the honour on October 22, ahead of the ceremony scheduled for November 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. The tribute will recognise Scott, screenwriter Stephen Beresford, director Simon Stone and the wider production team for bringing Charleson’s story to a new generation of audiences.
Elsinore follows Charleson, best known for starring in the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire, as he pursues his passion for theatre while confronting a devastating AIDS diagnosis. The film centres on his determination to perform Hamlet at London’s National Theatre during the final months of his life, capturing the courage and commitment behind what became one of his most celebrated performances.
Scott leads the cast as Charleson, alongside Academy Award winner Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn and Joe Locke. Colman portrays Dr Margaret Johnson, a physician who treated Charleson and other gay men during the HIV epidemic and helped establish a dedicated HIV clinic.
The film is directed by Stone and written by Beresford, whose previous work includes Pride. The creative team has reportedly nicknamed themselves “The Charleson Chaps” following their collaboration on the project.
Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, praised the filmmakers for creating a moving portrait of an artist whose final months demonstrated his dedication to performance and the community around him. He said the tribute would celebrate both the film and the remarkable actor who inspired it.
Charleson died in January 1990, aged 40, after being diagnosed with AIDS. His decision to speak openly about the illness and have AIDS recorded as his cause of death helped challenge the stigma surrounding the disease at a time when public understanding and acceptance remained limited.
Elsinore premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the International People’s Choice Award. It has continued to screen at autumn festivals, receiving audience awards at events including the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Hamptons International Film Festival.
Focus Features will release the film in select North American cinemas on November 20, with a wider release planned over the Thanksgiving holiday and through December.
The Gotham Awards have also announced other tributes for this year’s ceremony. Michael will receive the Gotham Musical Tribute, La Bola Negra will be honoured with the Gotham Vanguard Tribute, Danny Boyle will receive the Gotham Director Tribute for Ink, and animation studio LAIKA will receive the Gotham Anniversary Tribute. The nominees for the 36th annual awards will be announced on October 27.
