Chinese President Xi Jinping received a grand, tradition-steeped welcome upon arriving at Manas International Airport in Bishkek for his state visit to Kyrgyzstan and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
Greeted warmly on the red-carpeted tarmac by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and First Lady Aigul Japarova, Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were presented with traditional pastries (boorsoks) and honey.
The elaborated ceremony featured an honor guard, cultural displays of falcons, hounds, traditional warriors, and horsemen, and a touching moment inside the VIP lounge where local youth sang Chinese songs in Mandarin.
Kyrgyzstan Bilateral Ties:
Xi’s arrival in Bishkek marks a major diplomatic focal point for the region, combining a bilateral state visit to Kyrgyzstan with high-stakes multilateral diplomacy.
The Chinese president hailed bilateral relations as entering a “golden period”, with talks focusing heavily on economic cooperation, regional security, and major infrastructure projects like the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway.
The 26th SCO Summit:
Marking 25 years since the bloc’s founding, the summit brings together leaders from China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Iran, Belarus, and Central Asian member states.
The bloc continues to position itself as a counterweight to Western global influence, focusing on trade, digital transformation, and security.
Why it matters?
With Western sanctions and mounting economic pressure targeting both Moscow and Beijing as well as Tehran, leaders like Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are using the summit to lock in closer strategic, energy, and financial coordination.
Alongside Putin, leaders such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are holding closely watched side talks, navigating regional flashpoints and shifting global trade dynamics.
The Bishkek summit kicks off a heavy diplomatic stretch for the Chinese president.
Following his engagements in Kyrgyzstan, Xi is scheduled for a state visit to Egypt.
Furthermore, Xi Jinping is also widely expected to travel to New Delhi for the upcoming BRICS Summit, followed by high-level diplomatic engagements involving the United States.
