Kim Soo-hyun set to make comeback with first domestic project since Kim Sae-ron controversy
The K-drama star went on hiatus after allegations about his past relationship with the late actress emerged last year
South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun is preparing to return to public activities in Korea with his first domestic project in approximately a year following a period of controversy that led to suspended endorsements and delayed productions.
According to Hankook Ilbo, Kim will film a commercial on July 14 for a Philippine fashion brand, marking his first official activity in South Korea since allegations surrounding his past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae-ron emerged in March last year.
A representative from Kim’s agency, Gold Medalist, confirmed the scheduled commercial shoot on Monday. The development has renewed attention on the actor’s career prospects and the potential release of projects that were previously placed on hold.
The controversy began after claims surfaced alleging that Kim had been in a relationship with Kim Sae-ron for six years beginning in 2015, when she was 15 years old.
Additional allegations suggested he had pressured her regarding debt repayment. Kim denied the accusations during a press conference, maintaining that their relationship began only after she reached adulthood.
The actor subsequently filed criminal defamation complaints against Kim Sae-ui, head of the YouTube channel HoverLab (Garo Sero Institute), as well as members of Kim Sae-ron’s family. He also sought 12 billion won (approximately $8.8 million) in damages through a civil lawsuit.
Following the allegations, several brands ended endorsement agreements with Kim, while the Disney+ drama Knock-Off, originally scheduled for release last year, was placed on indefinite hold.
According to the report, police concluded in May that KakaoTalk messages and audio recordings released by Kim Sae-ui’s side had been manipulated or edited. Kim Sae-ui was later referred to prosecutors while in detention.

Kim’s upcoming commercial project is expected to mark the beginning of his gradual return to domestic entertainment activities as legal proceedings continue.
