7 children feared dead in Lahore tuition centre roof collapse: rescue service

LAHORE: As many as seven children were feared dead on Tuesday, while several others were injured, when the roof of a room housing a tuition centre collapsed in Lahore’s Kahna area.
A Rescue 1122 spokesperson said seven children were recovered with no pulse, with fears that they had died after being trapped under debris when the roof caved in.
He said the death toll could exceed 10, as Rescue 1122 teams on the spot reported to the Emergency Services headquarters that the condition of the trapped children was critical.
Rescue teams were present at the site and rescue operations were underway as of the latest update at 6pm.
A statement by the Edhi rescue service said that the roof of a residence’s room “collapsed suddenly”, burying between eight and 10 children under the rubble.
It said preliminary information indicated that the collapsed roof had been constructed using TR girders.
“Rescue operations are continuing at full pace, while Edhi ambulances remain on-site to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured,” the statement added.
According to initial reports, around 30 to 35 children were present at the site when the incident occurred.
